The town of Longwarry lies on the western border of the shire and has a population of over two thousand people. To the north of the town centre runs the Princes Highway, the main arterial route to central Melbourne.
Just off the Princes Highway in Longwarry at the Sand Road interchange, land has been identified as a potential site for a livestock exchange. The area has been strategically identified with its ease of access onto the Princes Highway.
Such a precinct would have the potential to become the regional livestock exchange. The existing Warragul saleyards is small and ageing, while the Pakenham saleyards in neighbouring Cardinia as significant growth and access constraints.
Livestock farming is one of the leading industries in Baw Baw, with many farms as well as two large meat processors operating in the shire. The creation of a new facility would cater for for the entire sector along with the creation of many jobs in our shire.
